For most EQ8 users clutch rings are wear parts which eventually need replacement. This is usually apparent from gradual reduction in locking torque, even with adjustment of the ‘bite point’ of the clutch locking lever. SAE’s redesign of the ring largely eliminates the unbalanced radial force on the worm gear hub that is part of the OEM ring design. It is important to do this if worm gear meshing clearance is to be controlled to the level of a few microns that low backlash operation requires.
Unlike the OEM design, this clutch ring runs dry against the hard-anodised mating clutching surface of the worm gear hub, reducing the clamping lever force needed to lock the clutch while slipping under torque overload conditions which might damage the worm gearing or worm bearings. The FEA-optimised design introduces a pair of integrally-machined clamping ‘shoes’ and flexures which allow the shoes to pivot into contact with the exterior of the mating surface on the worm wheel hub.
