The existing aluminium Declination shaft and counterweight bar are replaced by a double-ended hollow stainless steel Declination shaft running in a different bearing layout but retaining the original worm wheel.
Through-the-mount cabling is possible and (in the case of EQ8-R’s) is retained, and detent stops are provided to each axis to limit axis motion and protect the cable loom from wind-up. The existing RA drive motor is relocated to a folded layout with zero backlash timing belt drive.
SAE’s maintenance-free heavy-duty anti-backlash gearing is provided to both axes, comprising new match-lapped worm gears and worm wheels of SAE’s own design with preloaded worm blocks and upgraded timing belt drives of the most suitable ratio. Heavy duty shafts and bearings of increased precision are substituted for the original parts. Environmental sealing is improved.
The motor control board is replaced (EQ8 only), and the latest firmware installed. All mounts have the motor control board relocated slightly using a new plastic escutcheon, to create clearance for the extended Declination shaft.
